EU Looks to Geothermal in Drive for Energy Security
The European Union plans to endorse geothermal energy to reduce reliance on Russian gas and lower energy prices.
A draft document indicates that the 27 EU member states will support geothermal energy, urging the European Commission to develop a comprehensive plan to promote this renewable source. The initiative aims to cut emissions from heating and cooling systems, accelerate geothermal projects through financial guarantees, and simplify permitting processes. Despite its potential to meet 75% of the EU’s heating and cooling needs by 2040, geothermal energy currently accounts for less than 3% of the EU’s energy production, hindered by high initial investment costs and complex regulations.
