Waste Management (WM) is intensifying its focus on renewable energy, anticipating a significant rise in energy demand over the next decade, particularly driven by transportation needs.

Waste Management (WM) is intensifying its focus on renewable energy, anticipating a significant rise in energy demand over the next decade, particularly driven by transportation needs. CEO Jim Fish announced that WM is investing $3 billion in sustainable business initiatives from 2022 to 2026. This includes $1.6 billion for 20 plants to capture natural gas at landfills for power generation and their natural-gas-vehicle fleet, and $1.4 billion to improve and build new recycling plants. Fish highlighted renewable energy as a key component of WM’s strategy, noting that 100 of their 260 landfills could economically support renewable-energy plants. Additionally, 2025 priorities include integrating the recently acquired medical-waste company Stericycle, valued at $7.2 billion.
