Japan Targets 40-50% Power Supply from Renewable Energy by 2040
Japan has set a goal to source 40-50% of its electricity from renewable energy by fiscal year 2040, with nuclear power contributing an additional 20%.

Japan aims to significantly reduce its reliance on thermal power, decreasing it from 68.6% in 2023 to 30-40% by 2040. The draft energy policy emphasizes the need for long-term LNG contracts to mitigate risks during the transition. Additionally, Japan plans to increase the share of nuclear power and invest in innovative reactors, despite challenges stemming from the 2011 Fukushima disaster. These targets align with the country’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 60% by 2035 and 73% by 2040, aiming for net zero by 2050. The updated energy strategy is expected to be finalized and approved early next year. Read more.
