Why Geothermal Energy in Southeast Asia Faces Unexpected Roadblocks—and What’s at Stake
Geothermal energy holds significant promise for Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia and the Philippines due to their location on the seismically active Ring of Fire.

Geothermal energy holds significant promise for Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia and the Philippines due to their location on the seismically active Ring of Fire. However, the development of this clean, round-the-clock energy source remains limited by financial, regulatory, and community challenges. While geothermal energy use is projected to grow tenfold in the region by 2050, the high costs and risks associated with early-stage site exploration deter private investment. Both Indonesia and the Philippines have ambitious plans to expand their geothermal energy capacity as part of efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Financial support from organizations and policy changes are beginning to address some barriers, but community resistance over safety and environmental concerns persists. Efforts to engage with and address the concerns of local communities are crucial for the success of geothermal projects. Read more.
