Washington, D.C. Advances Toward 100% Renewable Energy by 2032
The District of Columbia is on track to meet its ambitious goal of sourcing 100% of its electricity from renewable energy by 2032, with significant progress in solar energy installations and supportive policies.

Washington, D.C. has implemented one of the nation’s most aggressive Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS), mandating that all electricity sold in the city come from renewable sources by 2032, including a specific requirement for local solar energy. As of 2023, the District has installed 237 MW of solar power, contributing to 59% of its locally generated electricity. Initiatives like the Solar for All program aim to provide the benefits of solar energy to low-income residents, further promoting equitable access to clean energy. The city’s commitment is also evident in legislative actions such as the Clean Energy DC Omnibus Amendment Act, which outlines strategies for energy efficiency and renewable energy adoption across various sectors.
