Sunrun’s Virtual Power Plant Now Runs on 75,000 Home Batteries

Sunrun has expanded its CalReady virtual power plant in California, now integrating 75,000 home batteries to provide up to 375 MW of backup power, enhancing grid stability during peak demand periods.

On May 1, 2025, Sunrun announced a significant expansion of its CalReady virtual power plant, which now connects approximately 75,000 home batteries from over 56,000 customers across California. This network can deliver up to 375 megawatts (MW) of electricity, sufficient to power around 280,000 homes. The system is designed to supply clean energy back to the grid during peak demand hours, particularly between 4 and 9 PM from May through October, thereby reducing reliance on fossil fuel plants. Participating homeowners can earn up to $150 per battery annually, with total customer earnings projected to reach nearly $10 million this year. This initiative represents a shift towards decentralized energy solutions, leveraging existing residential solar and storage systems to enhance grid resilience and reduce emissions. Read more.
