Oklahoma’s Shift to Wind and Solar Are Toppling Coal Power

In 2024, renewable energy sources like wind and solar surpassed coal in U.S. electricity generation, with Oklahoma generating more renewable energy than coal since 2016.

A recent report reveals that in 2024, renewable energy sources such as wind and solar produced more electricity than coal in the U.S., marking a significant shift since coal’s peak in 2007. Wind and solar now account for 17% of the nation’s electricity generation, while coal has declined to a historic low of 15%. Oklahoma, which has been generating more renewable energy than coal since 2016, is currently considering legislation to restrict the location of new wind and solar projects.  Read more.
