Minnesota Achieves Record Low Emissions, Solidifying Clean Energy Leadership

Minnesota’s 2025 Energy Factsheet reveals significant progress in reducing emissions and expanding clean energy, with zero-carbon sources supplying 53% of the state’s electricity and power sector emissions down 52% from 2005 levels.

Minnesota has reinforced its position as a clean energy leader, as detailed in the 2025 Minnesota Energy Factsheet. The state achieved a 4% reduction in power sector carbon emissions from 2023 to 2024, marking a 52% decrease since 2005. Zero-carbon energy sources, including renewables and nuclear, accounted for 53% of electricity generation in 2024, surpassing the national average of 42%. Renewables alone contributed one-third of the state’s electricity, while coal’s share declined from 43% to 20% over the past decade. Additionally, Minnesota improved energy efficiency, with energy productivity growing by 37% since 2001, and expanded its clean energy infrastructure by adding 388 megawatts of new solar capacity in 2024.
