Global Renewable Energy Capacity Hits Record Expansion
In 2024, global renewable energy capacity grew by 15.1%, adding 585 gigawatts, with China contributing nearly 64% of this expansion.

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) reported that in 2024, global renewable energy capacity experienced a record 15.1% increase, totaling an addition of 585 gigawatts and bringing the cumulative capacity to 4,448 GW. China led this growth by adding approximately 374 GW, primarily from solar installations, accounting for nearly 64% of the global increase. Despite this significant progress, the expansion rate still falls short of the 16.6% annual growth needed to achieve the global target of tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030. IRENA’s Director-General, Francesco La Camera, emphasized the persistent challenges of regional disparities and the urgency of accelerating renewable energy adoption to meet climate objectives.
